Department Announcements Formative Assessment Professional Development (FALCON)Coming to your school! North Carolina's Formative Assessment Learning Community's Online Network (FALCON). This network has been developed in an effort to provide North Carolina teachers with a basic understanding of formative assessment and to illustrate the role it should play in a comprehensive, balanced assessment system. A comprehensive, balanced assessment system includes formative assessment, interim/benchmark assessments, and statewide assessments that are aligned to state standards. Each component is important and should be valued for what it contributes. A WCS District Plan is available below. Principals will be working with their staffs to create a School FALCON implementation plan this fall. The link to the FALCON website is http://center.ncsu.edu/falcon/ . Usernames and passwords will be available after schools have created their plans, but you can visit the site to see an overview of FALCON.
Use of Lexile and Quantile ScoresHow do teachers and administrators use the Lexile and Quantile scores that are printed on individual EOG and EOC score reports? The Lexile score is a valuable piece of information about either an individual's reading ability or the difficulty of a text. Teachers will be learning more about the use of this score in Grade Level meetings, PLC's, and Department meetings this year. Also watch for more information about the new Quantile score, a measure of a student's ability to think mathematically. For more information, go to http://www.lexile.com and www.quantiles.com.
Common Core StandardsNC DPI is in the process of adopting Common Core Standards for all subject/department areas of curriculum. ELA and Math Common Core Standards have already been adopted by our State Board of Education. Teachers will be receiving updates on these standards during grade level, subject area, department, and curriculum committee meetings for the next two years. Most Common Core Standards will be taught and tested in the year 2012-13. Please visit the link below for more information.
